Mangalagiri Cotton: The Everyday Heirloom

Mangalagiri, a temple town in Guntur district, weaves a pit-loom cotton that was made for Andhra heat: dense enough to hold its shape, open enough to breathe through a Chennai August.

Its signature is the Nizam border — a fine zari or contrast band woven directly into the selvedge, never stitched on. The body stays plain or carries a small woven check; there is no printing on an authentic Mangalagiri.

The yarn is dyed before weaving, which is why the colour deepens rather than fades. A well-made Mangalagiri softens with every wash and reaches its best drape somewhere around the twentieth.

Wash it separately in cold water for the first three washes, skip the detergent brightener, and starch lightly if you want the crisp pleat that the weave was designed for.

Pair it the way Chennai does: oxidised silver, a contrast blouse pulled from the border colour, and no other embellishment. It is the saree we recommend to anyone building a first handloom wardrobe.
